It has long been acknowledged that research and development continues in between the published editions of an NFPA standard that advance fire protection and fire safety.  These advances often result in the introduction of a new product or technology that is not addressed in the current edition of the standard. The New Technology, and Equivalency sections of NFPA 13 are intended to facilitate the development of better system performance and more effective new products by allowing for their use with proper supporting documentation.

Learning Objectives:

1.    Discuss the concept of new technologies and equivalencies and why they were included in the standard.
2.    Identify new technologies that have benefitted from these provisions.
3.    Describe the process of producing new technologies
4.    Develop a process for evaluating and accepting new technologies in between editions of the standard.
